Conquering.....well most things.

So I know I gave you all a little resolution check-in at the end of January and it's about that time again.  It's now the end of February and while 2012 certainly is not what I expected, I'm not letting it get to me...too much.  So while every so often I may waver slightly off course, for the most part I am doing well with all of my goals.  I've been consistently using down my massive stash of beauty products and candles.  I'm not wasting everything, either. I'm actually using/enjoying what I have.  It's a nice feeling.

I haven't been biting my nails either.  I somewhat cheated here, because once I got them long enough, I had a set of gels/acrylics put on so that I couldn't bite them.  In my defense, there were a lot of stressful things going on and I really didn't want to break down and bite my nails.  So, the simplest way to avoid it being a problem was to not allow it the chance to be.  Nails are still manicured now, which is a win.

I've been conquering the diet too.  I'm a little stuck with it at the moment because for some reason my weight seems to be stuck.  Hopefully it starts going down again. It's not going up at least, which is positive.

Dieting...the ups and downs....and I'm not just talking about weight

So I've attempted this dieting post several times now, but have yet to complete it.  This is more than likely since I've yet to come up with a way to describe my mindset towards dieting that doesn't make me sound nuts.  Obviously, I want to lose weight, but in addition to that, I want to seriously eat healthier on a regular basis.  I am by no means trying to become one of those crazed macrobiotics who consider his or her body a temple, blah blah blah.  I just want to make a shift towards eating more "real" foods and less of those pre-packaged things that are barely discernible as foods.   This doesn't mean I am giving up all junk foods, but a serious cut-back is probably good.

Currently, I've hit a wall.  I'm stuck at negative 13 pounds, which while great, is nowhere near how much I want to lose.  I'm now forced to really push myself to lose this extra weight.  I really don't want to look like a beached whale this summer, which is sadly how it sometimes feels.

Not just yet, but soon, I may also be forced to somehow work exercise into my daily routine.  This is something I really am not looking forward to.  I'm just not one of those people who actually likes the gym. It's a chore for me to go there now...and it always will be.  Regardless, if I do keep losing weight, I will eventually need to go to the gym or else I will be allotted 45 calories a day and I don't foresee that lasting very long.

Once some more weight is lost, pictures will come up. Stay tuned :)

I've got a fever and the only cure is more.....free stuff

Bet you all were expecting me to say cowbell? Well, I didn't.   Today's lesson is about surviving on a budget.  I do it everyday and it's a real challenge at times.  I'll admit it.  I definitely have an affinity for the finer things in life...and lots of them at that.  I had a major spending problem for awhile there.  But I have recently (thanks to my student loans) learned how to curb my compulsion to buy buy buy.  Whoever called a consumer driven life meaningless should let loose with me for a day with an unbridled budget.  I bet I could get them to realize the joy there is to be found in being a consumer.  However, this is no longer me.  I simply cannot afford it.  So to satisfy my cravings for new and interesting/lovely things, I have gotten creative.

This means, I have become familiar with the free sample.  Now, I know you're probably thinking that I just collect a lot of small packages of things I'll never use like denture glue and toddler diapers, but this isn't true.  There's actually a lot of cool free trials on stuff that is actually nice and useful out there.  And an added bonus, if it is something you like, nine times out of ten, the trial comes with a coupon for a larger size.

I've also learned two other pretty snazzy tricks.  The first one is to sign up for product testing sites.  I've come to enjoy this actually.  You can register with certain website and you will be allowed to do free product trials as long as you review/promote the product.  Awesome, right? I think it's a pretty sweet deal.  Influenster is my favorite of these sites.  The second way you can to score some sweet items is entering contests/drawings. There's a lot of stuff out there you can win with minimal work and maybe even just some luck. Regardless, the lesson to be learned here is that life goes on when you're on a budget.

Operation Use Down "The Hoard"

Throughout the course of my existence, I have amassed an alarming amount of "stuff."  Everything I've gathered throughout the years can be sorted out and neatly placed into 3 categories, however.
They are as follows:
1) Things that can be consumed/used - These items include huge amounts of hair care products, cosmetics, body lotions and shower gels, perfumes, and in my case candles.  I know the grooming products are pretty standard, but let me explain the candle hoard.  I was never into that sort of thing, until I working in a candle store and now I can't seem to get enough.  So now that I am actually trying to use what I have, I'm also  trying to buy less.  Let's keep our fingers crossed.  I have a girly hoard.  I'll admit it.
2) Clothing and Accessories - This is just what it sounds like.  All of my clothing as well as the shoes, bags and jewelry are in this category.  This only further perpetuates the girly hoard.
3) Things that occupy space - This includes all of my photo frames, games, knick knacks and anything else you can think of.  These items are all mostly girly and some also outdated.  I'm trying to pair down the outdated items.  Really. I am.

So this is my goal.  I want to use down the hoard that I have oh so carefully gathered and stashed away.  The reason for this is twofold.  The first component is that I ran out of space and organizing solutions.  The second component is that I cannot afford my old ways still.  I just have too much and the only way I see to fix the problem is through using up the items.  As I write this for all of you, I have a votive burning. One more way to attack to hoard.  I get a warm ambiance and a soft orange smell and I'm using up the things I have. I've been working on this scheme for awhile though, really.  My hair products and body lotions, etc. are also slowly thinning out.  I use them everyday and this helps.  I also use make-up and perfume daily now(or as close to it as I can remember to get).

I'm actually doing good with this endeavor too.  Thank God.  I'm slowly using things up and each product I use up and throw out leaves me with a liberating feeling.  It's incredibly empowering to feel like you are gaining control of something and working on yourself in the process.  I also did something else incredible today.  I did a wardrobe edit and got rid of three pieces of clothing.  I know this is the theme of all my posts, but I need to keep this up to motivate myself. The end.
